Case Study — Deployment Playbook

Smarter Data Center Deployment

Smarter Data Center Deployment should avoid 9 common mistakes.

Key pitfalls to avoid include: failure to take Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) into account, poor cost-to-build estimating, improper design criteria, site selection before design criteria, space planning before design criteria, designing into dead-end, misunderstanding PUE, misunderstanding certification, and overcomplicated designs.

By understanding and avoiding these common mistakes, organizations can significantly improve their data center deployment outcomes and reduce project risks.

Breaking New Ground on Data Center Efficiency

How eBay's "Project Mercury" used PUE, TCO and DCMM best practices to drive end-to-end data center efficiency.

When eBay experienced the need to consolidate in the face of growing demand for data center space, it took a holistic, end-to-end view of the space it was using, the servers it was deploying, and how its data centers were designed and operated.

This effort, internally named "Project Mercury," used advanced technical, organizational, and business techniques to create a highly efficient data center, while giving eBay's global online commerce platform lower costs, increased business agility, and room for future growth.

Case Study — Sustainability

Google's Green Data Centers

A Network POP Case Study — how Google saves millions through smart, low-cost retrofits.

Every year, Google saves millions of dollars and avoids emitting tens of thousands of tons of carbon dioxide thanks to their data center sustainability efforts. In fact, their facilities use half the energy of a typical data center.

This case study describes the retrofit of one of Google's smaller networking rooms (POP — Point of Presence). Google spent a total of $25,000 to optimize this room's airflow and reduce air conditioner use: a $25,000 investment in plastic curtains, air return extensions, and a new air conditioner controller returned a savings of $67,000/year — all performed without any operational downtime.
